election. there has been mostly complimentary talk about governor romney saying he was a good man. he also had a good plan but there has been talk about he never really connected fully with the american people. to that point, governor jindal was asked about a comment romney made on a conference call yesterday with donors. he said he lost because president obama offered, quote gifts to young people and minorities. jindal rejected that and alluded to romney's damaging 47% comment, saying the gop had to fight for 100% of the vote. >> let's show we're the party not of big banks, wall street, of bailouts, not big business. we're the party that stands for families and small businessings, those simply working hard to pay their bills so their kids can get even better jobs. >> reporter: there's also been a lot of talk about the hispanic vote. of course president obama got 71%. mitt romney just 27%. compare that to the 44% that president bush got in 2004. you can see the party has its demographics problem. they're talking about softening their stance on immigration. possibly talking about, comprehen

and not the reason governor romney lost. what's the reaction been like in washington? >> republicans are very disappointed by this, and there are three big reasons. first of all, this is sour grapes, like this certainly isn't gracious. second, it's just not accurate. there were many, many other factors that were involved, gifts to minorities were not the reason that president obama won the white state of new hampshire, the largely white state of iowa. it's not why he won the hometown of paul ryan, janesville, wisconsin. so there's just a factual issue. but third and biggest, and this is where you heard the louisiana governor, bobby jindal, installed yesterday as the chairman of the republican governors association. this is where you heard him coming in, that republicans say this is a just-doesn't-get-it moment for romney. it makes republicans think that the 47% comment was no slip of the tongue. at his press conference in las vegas yesterday, governor jindal, our reporter, says became visibly agitated about this and said these comments were absolutely wrong. and they come at a time when almos

, there are certain aspects of governor romney's record and his ideas that i think could be very helpful. well, to give you one example i do think that he did a terrific job running the olympics. i would like to get ideas from him and see if there are some ways we can potentially work together. >> stephanie: if it were me, i would would have said with government money. >> but you're not gracious. >> stephanie: i'm a left wing hate monger. as you know. >> according to sean hannity and brian mulroney. >> stephanie: right. >> cry baby sore losers. >> stephanie: let's do compare and contrast. here is mitt romney in a phone call to downers. >> the president's campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition give an extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote. >> e ordinary gifts medicare and social security is stuff we paid into. >> stephanie: i mean really talk like just continuing to be in denial. and it's just so insulting. >> bobby jindal took him to task saying romney was dividing america by speaking like that. >> s

night you said i were looking forward to speaking with governor romney, sitting down in the coming weeks to discuss ways you could work together on this nation's problems. have you extended that invitation? has he accepted and in what ways can you work together. >> thank you, mr. president. and congratulations by the way. >> christy was there when i was running for state senate. christy and i go back a long ways. >> i have never seen you lose. i wasn't looking that one time. megyn: oh, boy. joining me now, a democratic strategist and former aide to jim mcgreevey. bill mcgurn is a former speech writer for president bush. bill, your comments for the "wall street journal," if you had somebody from fox news channel going up to a president romney or george w. bush and saying congratulations. never seen you lose. there would be a little belowback. was that bias or just a nice moment. >> i think in the context it's this clubby atmosphere which is a problem. i have spent a long time in journalism mostly in opinion conservative side. i always thought it was wrong to whine about press bias. more p

in louisiana, the governor, bobby jindall, staunch romney supporterch these remarks, are categorically untrue. >> jindall, as conservative as they get weft have got to stop dividing the american voters. if we are going to be a competitive party and when elections on the national stage, and fight for principles we need two messages, one we are fighting for 100% of the votes. and second, our policies, benefit every american who wants to pursue the american dream. a lot of infighting between republicans. it is reminiscent, comments, about, the 47% tape, i'm confused as to how contraception, health care or college loans are racial issues and how they're, they're gifts to people. as opposed to tools to help people live a better or healthier life. >> you have to think this, this phone call with some of the top donors. here he was, they gave basically $900 million. sure they had some questions and were demanding some answers. because he didn't expect to raise $500 million. there he was raising $900 million. they're look what happened. you were telling us one thing. it didn't pan out. to be that way

. hilary, you just heard the governor of louisiana, bobby jindal, he's very critical of mitt romney, the campaign he ran. what did you make of that? >> well, i think there's just a whole lot of distancing going on. pretty typical after a losing campaign. i thought, you know, governor jindal spoke well about some of the mistakes republicans have made. a little bit of a mixed message. i think this was a values election, not the demographic election that some people like governor jindal and mitt romney have been talking about. so i think he needs to be clearer about those values. he did say we ought to not be protecting tax cuts -- you know, tax policies for the wealthy. i think the challenge for somebody like governor jindal who just is sort of sitting back and criticizing now is to take on republicans that are relevant. because mitt romney's no longer relevant. go to john boehner, go to mitch mcconnell and say let's promote these policies that help poor people that help the middle class that promote jobs. that's what the president's been trying to do. that's what he's calling for in

governor bobby jindal took exception to mr. romney's comments. >> i think that is absolutely wrong. we have got to stop dividing the american voters. we need to go after 100% of the votes, not 53%. we need to go after every single vote. you to connect your policies to the aspirations of the american people. i don't think the cam pape did that. as a result, this became a contest between personalities and chicago loves that. >> eric: here is where i am. i'll throw it out there quickly. i think the republicans need to focus their attention. some people may be too far right and some may be close to the center for you. pick a lane, republicans. get behind someone and win an election. this infighting is no good for me. >> greg: i kind of disagree. this is called a hate fact. it's a fact that people hate. this is how obama won. however, you do have to go after every vote. but you have to play the game they do. that is what the argument is about. even loves santa claus on christmas morning but no one wants the credit card in january. until that bill is due, which will probably come in mandarin the

that maybe the gop brand was suffering and had been hurt. why is it that republicans are elected governor, but mitt romney could not win the presidency? >> i think mitt is a good and decent man. we talked a lot about that here yesterday. 30 republican governor, the most we had in a dozen years. most of the battle ground states have republican governors in them leading the way, turning things around, balancing budgets, doing it while lowering tax, seeing revenues go up by improving the economy in each state. i think the reason is we laid out a clear path, clear agenda. people gravitated toward that. and unfortunately, mitt romney's campaign in the end was not able to overcome the early attacks from the obama campaign back in june and they suffered the inability to clearly lay that out. republican governors as a contrast have been able to offer a clear plan for each of our states. we're going to change america one state at a time. we're optimistic about the future with great leadership here. >> gretchen: thanks for getting >> thank you. >> gretchen: your e-mails on oak trees and allergies a
